Discover Eternal Joy

winter-sun

This is the time of year when we reflect upon our lives and circumstances. It is a time of year when we are using many external tools to create a sense of joy. Things such as buying presents, going to parties, decorating the house, and spending time with family. Although all of things are fun and fulfilling, we need to be sure that the joy we are feeling comes from within and is not just the external circumstances creating a sense of happiness. This is an article from the Chopra Center that I wanted to share with all of you. I hope you enjoy it and begin to discover your own eternal joy.

Happiness, as used here, is based primarily on circumstances. When we perceive  the circumstances in our lives as favorable, then we are more likely to be happy. For instance, if we have what we consider the right job, the right home, and the right friends, then we’re happy in those areas of our life. Of course, there’s the really big one – having the right special someone to share our life with. If we have that, then we’re really happy. There are countless things, big and small, that we use to try and make ourselves happy. The list is essentially endless.

What all these things have in common is that they are all external, all circumstantial, and all transitory. However, this does not make these things or their pursuit bad in any way. Fulfilling work, enjoyable living space, and fulfilling relationships are wonderful. They are true blessings and deserve gratitude. But external things are often hard to control, circumstances inevitably change over time, and transitory things come to an end sooner or later. Therefore, the happiness that comes from these things is bound to change as well.

If happiness is derived mainly from outer things, then joy is found in the opposite direction. Joy originates from within. Whereas happiness might be considered a state of circumstances, joy is a state of being.

True joy comes from the very nature of who we are. The world’s wisdom traditions tell us that infinite delight and bliss reside within the very core of reality itself – and therefore within our core as well. Infinite joy is an inherent quality of our own deepest being. Therefore, unlike happiness, this inner joy is not based on anything circumstantial, external, or transitory. It is an abiding, permanent, and inherent quality of who we are in our deepest truth.

As we grow spiritually, we begin to come into greater contact with this inherent joy that resides deep within us. We also begin to shift gears in the way we approach life. Instead of trying to generate delight and wellbeing from outer circumstances, we increasingly let our inner joy flow into our life circumstances. In this way, work, home, relationships, etc. are indeed joyful for us, but not because these things are creating the joy, but because our inner joy is expressing itself in these circumstances.

As our awareness expands, we realize that our particular circumstances don’t matter as much anymore. Instead, our joyful state of being increasingly radiates throughout all circumstances and becomes immune to their constant shifting.

The Journey

Tahoe As I spent last weekend in Lake Tahoe, I took in the beautiful sites. This hiking trail was so peaceful and serene. I felt closer to nature and connected to myself. This path looks endless and reminds me that our lives are ever changing. We don’t always know where we will end up, but if we have the courage to keep walking, we will discover so much goodness along the way. It is not about the destination. It is about the journey and what we see and experience along the way. I am so grateful for my family, friends, and students. My heart is full knowing I am not alone on this journey of  life.

Namaste.

“Your life is a sacred journey. It is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous challenges at every step along the way. You are on the path… exactly where you are meant to be right now… And from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph, of healing, of courage, of beauty, of wisdom, of power, of dignity, and of love.”~ Caroline Adams ~

Wellness Retreat

Toni-5_WebTomorrow I leave to go on a Wellness Retreat with my dear friend Kirsti. We are headed up to Lake Tahoe to celebrate her last chemo treatment. She has had great improvement and we are excited to get away to rejuvenate. Both of us could use some much needed rest and relaxation. I am so excited to share this trip with her!

Sometimes we just need a few moments to sit and breathe. Let our minds catch up with our busy life style. Bringing awareness to your breath and your surroundings can have profound healing effects. This mindful breathing and  stillness brings clarity to the mind.  Problems are often resolved, feelings are smoothed, and a general sense of peace occurs. Try sitting and evening out your breath. Count to four on the inhale and count to four on the exhale. Pause. Do this for two more cycles of breath. Then just sit a moment or two more with an even, effortless breath. Notice the clarity of your mind and the love in your heart. Embrace the sense of ease, comfort, and peace.

“If you have your attention on what is, you will see the fullness in every moment. You will discover the dance of the divine in every leaf, in every petal, in every blade of grass, in every rainbow, in every rushing stream, and in every breath of every living being.”

~Deepak Chopra

Fearless

fearless As Halloween approaches I find myself thinking about things that I am afraid of. One of the things that sticks out the most is that when I am presented with something new, I find myself clamming up and automatically turning away from it. Whether it is a new yoga pose, a new pranyama, a new skill, or even new people; I tend to shy away from it. In the past two weeks I have been having inner monologues of encouragement to face these these new things and take them for a test drive. And you know what? I actually like them! This all brings me back to Dr Suess’s classic book “Green Eggs and Ham“! I have learned that a little fear can be inspiring and exhilarating. Especially when I give myself the chance to explore new things without worrying about the outcome.

My new mantra: “I will try this new thing and not be afraid”.

What are you afraid of?

Take Time To Breathe

Resting-Pigeon_Web Each day, take a moment to  pause and breathe. Find just a few moments to tune into your breath and to yourself. See the world around you and feel gratitude for it. Spend just 5 minutes a day in a quiet spot and breathe.

In taking this time to pause and reflect, you will feel more calm and peaceful.

“Your body is your connection to the cosmic computer, which is organizing an infinity of events simultaneously. By listening to your body and responding to it with awareness, you tap into the field of infinite possibility, where the natural experience is peace, harmony, and joy.”  -Deepak Chopra

Too Busy?

Handstand-Tree_WebSometimes life seems to get busier and busier. At this time of the year, the days actually get shorter as the sun sets earlier. This can make you feel like there is not enough hours in the day to get everything done. Well, you know what? It is okay to leave things for another day. The laundry can wait, the floors can wait to be washed, the dry cleaners are open tomorrow, and the car can be washed another day .  Take a moment to yourself and do something fun! For me, I love spending time with my family watching our favorite TV shows or going out to eat. Tonight we will spending time in Simi Vally at  Brian’s  band competition. We will be spending a fun evening with other parents watching our talented kids. Everything else can wait. It will get done, soon…..     : )

This pose I am doing is handstand with tree legs. It is my favorite pose. It makes me feel happy and alive! How about you- what makes you happy?

Injury Prevention

yoga therapyFrom Yoga Journal. com

Injuries caused by a hatha yoga practice are usually minor and limited to simple ligament sprains and muscle strains, with the occasional slip, fall, or forced adjustment. The most common injuries are caused by repetitive isometric strain or overstretching and occur at the wrists, shoulders, neck, along the spine, and at the sacroiliac joint, hamstrings, and knees. If not addressed, these minor setbacks can have a long-term impact on the balance of alignment within the practice. Some yogis even bring ailments to the mat, which can also have lifelong effects upon range of motion, breathing, supply of energy, and quality of meditation.

When you see injury in any activity—including yoga—it’s often a question of someone trying to do too much too fast. That’s why it’s essential to learn proper alignment and respect your body’s limitations. Study with an experienced teacher, learn slowly, and move mindfully to lesson your chances of an unnecessary yoga injury.

Past Experiences

heart on the sea Today is my mother’s birthday. I find myself reflecting back on her life. Could I have been a better daughter? Was she happy? Did I tell her I loved her enough? My mother passed away 9 years ago. She had a severe case of Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am so grateful that I was able to take of her and learn so much from her doctor’s and physical therapists. As I struggle with my own arthritic issues, I realize that sharing in her experience, I am able to pass my knowledge on to my students. I am continually learning new ways to ease pain and gain more functionality. I am now learning from my own doctor’s and physical therapists and I combine this knowledge with my yoga training.  I would like to believe that I helped my mom in every way possible, and that she knew how much I loved her. Today, she guides me to help my students.  I truly believe that our past experiences shape who we are today .

Thank you mom for giving me a lifetime of knowledge and compassion.

Happy Birthday mom, I love you!

Vegan/Gluten Free Chex Muddy Mix

This version of the recipe is just as delicious as the original! The difference is that it tastes a little lighter. My family loves it and it will disappear almost as soon a I make it! Try it and let me know what you think!

chexmuddy mix

  • 4 cups Rice Chex
  • 1/3 cup chocolate peanut butter *
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/8 cup vegan butter **

* I used Dark Chocolate Dreams by the Peanut Butter & Co. I bought it at Sprouts.

** I used Earth balance vegan butter sticks. I bought it at Sprouts.

Put the Rice Chex in a large bowl and set aside.

Put the chocolate peanut butter and the butter in a bowl and put in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir and place back in the microwave for about 30-60 seconds.

Stir in vanilla. Pour chocolate mixture over the Rice Chex and mix well until the cereal is well coated. Place in a plastic container and add powdered sugar. Place lid on tight and shake until cereal well coated with sugar. Store in the refrigerator and enjoy!
