Serenity is defined as:
- The state of being serene; calmness; peacefulness.
- A lack of agitation or disturbance.
I find that sometimes we are in a constant state of searching for serenity. Trying to satisfy this need by accumulating things or resisting the series of natural changes in our lives. On Friday, my son went back to school and I was very sad to see him leave. But this is a natural change that happens in life. Our kids grow up and learn to live independently. Now my life has shifted back into a place where I can enjoy my beautiful mountain home alone with my husband. We have spent all of our adult lives raising and providing for our kids, and now we can enjoy spending time together. I miss my son incredibly, but I also love this precious time with my husband. Once I stopped resisting the natural change of my son leaving, I found serenity in my own home. These two quotes resonate deeply with me.
- “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”
― Lao Tzu
- “We are not going to change the whole world, but we can change ourselves and feel free as birds. We can be serene even in the midst of calamities and, by our serenity, make others more tranquil. Serenity is contagious. If we smile at someone, he or she will smile back. And a smile costs nothing. We should plague everyone with joy. If we are to die in a minute, why not die happily, laughing? (136-137)”
― Swami Satchidananda, The Yoga Sutras
